Household Maintenance

CEILINGS/ROOF

1. Report leaks immediately. Put a bucket or pan under the leak and report it to the Crest Resident Services Office or call the RA on duty at (951) 961.0274. Treat major leaks as an emergency.

2. T.V. antennas may not be attached to the roof or windows, or any exterior part of the building. For those who wish to expand their cable services outside of our contracted company, satellite dishes must be capable of being attached to the eaves of the house like those used with our cable contractor. Any damages that may occur due to this equipment installation will be the responsibility of the Resident. Residents are responsible for having all equipment removed prior to their vacating the unit.

LIGHT BULBS

A full complement of bulbs will be in your unit when you move in. You are responsible for replacing burned out bulbs inside of your unit, including appliance bulbs in the refrigerator and stove and fluorescent bulbs in the kitchen. If you have a problem with removing a bulb from a fixture, submit a work order to the Crest Resident Services Office and leave the replacement bulb close to the area for Maintenance staff to assist. All bulbs must be in working order upon move-out.

LOCKS/KEY REPLACEMENT

If you lose your keys, report it to the Crest Resident Services Office immediately. Your house will be re-keyed with a new lock. There will be a $40.00 charge assessed for replacement of your bolt key and newly changed locks. Locks will be re-keyed as a matter of policy--no exceptions.

You are not permitted to change or add any locks or extra security devices, such as chain guards on external or internal doors. University policy requires accessibility to all places of occupancy by Housing staff in case of an emergency. Also, maintenance may periodically need access to your unit for preventative work or upon your request.

PAINT

Residents are not permitted to paint any house within Housing. You may request a work order from the Housing staff to survey your home to determine the need for paint. If your house is in need, it will be scheduled accordingly. If any unauthorized painting is observed, our maintenance staff will correct the painting immediately, and the Resident will be charged for labor and materials.

PEST CONTROL

To remain pest free, it is important to keep your environment clean. If you have a pest problem, fumigation can be arranged through the Crest Resident Services Office at no charge. You will need to prepare your home and plan to be out of your unit for three to four hours. Fumigations must be scheduled through the Crest Resident Services Office only. Residents are not allowed to have outside companies come onto the premises to treat for pest problems.

TRASH

Residents must carry all trash to the dumpsters. No trash may be kept outside of your unit or placed in any of the common trash receptacles other than the dumpsters. Over-sized items such as furniture require special handling to discard. Contact the Crest Resident Services Office to arrange for Grounds staff to pick up the items to properly discard them. There are green dumpsters located throughout the complex for your convenience. Locations are:

•Avocado Alley

•Alley way at Linden

•Corner of Florida and Linden

•Utah Alley

•Peach

•Cherry

• The Laundry Room

• Corner of Kentucky and Cherry

• Blaine Street

• Idaho Alley

• Avocado

Residents may not store their own personal outdoor garbage containers in their yard or allow debris to collect and cause clutter. If violations of the above occur, Residents will be issued a “Friendly Reminder” notice. Within 48 hours, Residents must correct the problem or a warning letter will be issued. If after 48 hours of this notice the correction has not been made, our staff will come in to remove the item(s) at a charge to the Resident. For removal of Christmas trees please contact the Crest RSO.

WALLS

1. Walls can be washed with mild household cleaners. Walls must be free of marks when you vacate (regular cleaning is recommended rather than one time cleaning.)

2. All-Purpose spray cleaners such as Formula 409 spray work well on the inside woodwork.

3. If not properly vented, bathrooms may develop a mold problem. If so, it can be cleaned by using mild chlorine bleach and water solution.

4. It is important to ventilate your unit to avoid the growth of mold, mildew and/or bacteria. Condensation is created if the windows or doors remain closed for long durations and the furnace is left on without circulation. Bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments!

Please follow these helpful tips:

a. Leave the bathroom door or window open when bathing, if appropriate.

b. Leave a door ajar so air is able to flow through the security screen.

c. Open the windows to allow airflow.

d. On breezy days, open oppositely located windows and/or doors to create a cross breeze.

e. It is not recommended for Residents to leave the furnace on throughout the night.

WATER

The only time that the water is shut off is in the event of an emergency, (i.e. broken water lines, broken toilets, etc.) In most instances, we will notify Residents of our intent to shut off the water, but we hope you realize this is not always possible.
